Airstream Refit

Last winter, Morris Yachts took on a very unique project, to have their craftsman refit the interior of a 1977 Airstream Trailer, owned by Island Outfitters, to be like the inside of a luxury sailing yacht. The Airstream arrived at our Maine production facility in October of 2013, and work commenced almost immediately. The interior and floor were completely removed, water and fuel tanks removed, the subfloor rebuilt. The Morris design team, with additional support from interior designer Kate Gable of TACK studios, created an entirely new interior layout and design featuring classic teak and holly flooring, and cherry cabinetry and accents. New Corian countertops were installed, along with new appliances including Wolfe stove, microwave, Sub-Zero wine chiller, and refrigerator-freezer drawers also by Sub-zero. We took the project further by partnering with the design team from Sunbrella for all interior and exterior fabrics and accessories. Their beautiful selection of elegant fabrics really brought the Airstream – now renamed The Rhode Yacht – to life.

Morris Yachts CEO Doug Metchick and Greg Hall of Island Outfitters, the trailer’s owner, dreamed up the project as a way to celebrate the coastal New England lifestyle central to each company’s brand. Since its completion the Airstream has been featured at a number of events including the Newport Jazz Festival, Vineyard Cup Regatta, the Newport-Bermuda Race, the Newport Int’l Boat Show, the US Sailboat Show in Annapolis, and various other music and food festivals in the New England area.
