Morris Yachts’ founder Tom Morris moved his young family to Mount Desert Island, Maine in the early 1970’s to build boats because he was captivated by sailing along the Maine coast. That same love has been passed on to his son, and Morris Ambassador, Cuyler. And thanks to our Maine-based charter fleet, you don’t necessarily have to sail your Morris up to Down East Maine to experience the same rugged beauty and amazing sailing that has been inspiring the Morris family for generations.
“The preserved beauty of our coastline and islands ensures that this part of Maine is a place where the more things change, the more things stay the same,” Cuyler says in the intro of his “greatest hits” Maine cruising itinerary that all Morris charter guests get when they charter from us.
“I’ve been lucky to sail these waters, first as a child with my family, then as husband and father of my own four children. Here are just a few of the many favorite places I always look forward to returning to when we head out for a week of sailing and exploring the Maine coast.”
Located on Mount Desert Island, the Morris Yachts Northeast Harbor Yard & Marina where you’ll pick up your charter boat is only moments away from the heart of Acadia National Park and in the virtual epicenter of classic Maine cruising grounds.
Frenchboro is only a short sail from Northeast Harbor but you’ll see it feels much more remote Head ashore to the windward side via an enchanted path (look close for fairy houses). And you can buy some of the freshest lobsters around for your first night aboard.
You haven’t cruised in Maine until you’ve experienced the stunning Eggemoggin Reach. There you’ll find glorious sailing and you’ll be cruising in the company of some of the most beautiful wooden boats in the world. Sail under the suspension bridge that connects Deer Isle to the mainland. Stop for the night in Brooklin, home to the famous Wooden Boat School, and admire the floating art around you.
And this is only a taste of the cruising beauty you’ll find in our little corner of Maine.
